Understanding Medicare's Four Parts

Medicare is divided into parts, and each covers something different. Here's what you need to know before picking a plan.

A
Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services. Most people get Part A free at 65.

B
Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, lab tests, and medical equipment. Requires a monthly premium (2025: $185/mo).

C
Medicare Advantage

A private-plan alternative to Original Medicare that bundles Parts A & B — and usually Part D. Often includes dental, vision, and hearing extras.

D
Drug Coverage

Adds prescription drug coverage. Available as a stand-alone plan with Original Medicare or built into most Medicare Advantage plans.

The gap in Original Medicare: Parts A and B together cover about 80% of approved costs — you're responsible for the remaining 20% with no out-of-pocket maximum. That's where Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans come in.

Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement

These are the two main paths after getting Parts A and B. Neither is universally better — the right choice depends on your health, budget, and how you use your coverage.

Feature Medicare Advantage (Part C) Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Monthly Premium Often $0–$50/mo (some plans) $80–$250+/mo depending on plan & age
Out-of-Pocket Max Yes — capped annually Plan G covers most costs after Part B deductible
Doctor Networks Must use plan network (HMO/PPO) Any doctor who accepts Medicare — nationwide
Dental / Vision / Hearing Often included Not included (purchase separately)
Drug Coverage (Part D) Usually bundled in Need a separate Part D plan
Referrals Required Often yes (HMO plans) No referrals needed
Travel Coverage Limited outside service area Nationwide + some foreign travel emergency
Annual Plan Changes Benefits can change each year Core benefits standardized by federal law
Best For Healthy beneficiaries who want low premiums and extra benefits Those who want predictable costs and full provider freedom
Popular Medigap plans in Virginia: Plan G is the most comprehensive (covers everything except the Part B deductible). Plan N offers lower premiums with small copays. A broker can run side-by-side quotes from multiple carriers — call 757-991-9290.

Medicare Enrollment Periods — Don't Miss Yours

Enrolling at the wrong time can mean permanent premium penalties. Here's every window you need to know.

IEP

Initial Enrollment Period Turning 65

A 7-month window: 3 months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and 3 months after. This is your best opportunity — enroll on time to avoid penalties.

GEP

General Enrollment Period Annual

January 1 – March 31 each year. If you missed your IEP, this is your next chance. Coverage starts July 1, and late-enrollment penalties may apply.

SEP

Special Enrollment Period Life Events

If you're still working at 65 and covered by employer insurance, you may qualify for an SEP when you retire. Also available for moves, losing other coverage, and other qualifying events.

OEP

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Annual

October 15 – December 7 — switch Medicare Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare for the following year. Changes take effect January 1.

!

Late Enrollment Penalties Warning

Part B penalty: 10% added to your premium for every 12-month period you were eligible but didn't enroll — permanently. Part D penalty: 1% of the national base premium per month you go without creditable drug coverage.

Medicare FAQs

Questions I answer every week — in plain language.

Does using a Medicare broker cost me anything extra?
No. Medicare brokers are compensated by the insurance carriers. The plan premium is identical whether you enroll through a broker or directly. You get expert, personalized guidance at zero extra cost.
I'm still working at 65. Do I have to sign up for Medicare?
If you're covered by employer insurance through your own (or your spouse's) active employment, you may be able to delay Medicare without penalty. But the rules matter — call me before your birthday to review your specific situation and avoid a costly mistake.
What's the difference between Plan G and Plan N?
Both are popular Medigap plans. Plan G covers almost everything after the Part B deductible. Plan N has lower premiums but includes small copays ($20 for office visits, $50 for ER) and doesn't cover Part B excess charges. For most Virginia beneficiaries, Plan G offers the most predictability.
Can I switch Medicare plans after I enroll?
Yes, but timing matters. Medicare Advantage plans can be switched during Annual Open Enrollment (Oct 15 – Dec 7) or the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1 – Mar 31). Medigap switches may require medical underwriting outside your initial enrollment window.
