Open Enrollment for 2027 health insurance plans opens November 1, 2026 and closes January 15, 2027. That's a short window — and the people who walk in prepared get better results. Here's the checklist to run through before November 1 so you're not scrambling.

1. Gather Your Income Information

Your subsidy (Advanced Premium Tax Credit) is based on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) for the coming year. Start estimating now:

  • W-2 employment income
  • Self-employment income (net, after deductions)
  • Social Security benefits (if applicable)
  • Any other household income sources

Why it matters: Underestimating your income to get a bigger subsidy can result in paying back the difference when you file your taxes. Overestimating means leaving money on the table monthly. Getting this number right is worth the effort.

2. List Your Current Doctors and Medications

Before comparing plans, know what you need to protect. Write down:

  • Your primary care doctor's name and practice
  • Any specialists you see regularly
  • All prescription medications (including dosage and frequency)
  • Any planned surgeries or procedures in 2027

This list lets your broker (or you) filter plans to only those that cover your providers and medications at a reasonable cost.

3. Start Your Marketplace Application Early

Virginia uses enroll.marketplace.virginia.gov — not the federal marketplace. Create your account and start filling out the application before November 1. You don't have to finish it or submit it — but having your household information entered saves time when plans go live.

Pro tip: Don't finalize your application alone. I review applications with clients to catch income errors and household mistakes before they cause subsidy repayment issues at tax time.

4. Don't Auto-Renew Without Comparing

Carriers change their networks, formularies, and premiums every year. The plan that was best for you in 2026 may not be best in 2027. New plans enter the market. Your subsidy amount may change. Spending 30 minutes comparing during Open Enrollment can save you hundreds over the course of the year.

5. Contact a Broker Before November 15

Brokers get busy fast once Open Enrollment opens. If you want a proper side-by-side comparison and personalized help enrolling, reach out early. I take appointments for Open Enrollment prep starting in October — that way we're ready to move the day plans go live.
